Bierman’s intricately detailed drawings highlight the simultaneous beauty and terror of life. Her work is born from her personal experiences of love, death, grief, and hope. It is rich in symbolism, with animals and plants enveloping each composition. Additional symbolism draws upon nature, mythos, folklore, and occulture to illustrate the subconscious and its struggles, yearnings and emotions. These fantastical visions grapple with, and materialize meaning from her own profound life shifts, bearing the weight of experience that language fails to express.
Each artwork is intricate and time intensive, resulting in an intimate and meditative working approach. As each piece evolves on the page, through sketches, washes of paint, and layers of color pencil, insights shift and evolve. What first appears as a narrative of shortcomings, a challenge, a loss, is re-framed as a strength, a perspective shift, and an opportunity for growth. Care and pursuit of a high level of craft becomes a devotional act, a commitment to understanding and witnessing all aspects of the self.
Born in New York, Bierman earned her BFA in Fiber, with a concentration in Sustainability and Social Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland in 2015.
